Chief's Monthly Report

9/19/11

TO:  Village of Fontana Protection Committee Members and Trustees

From: Steve Olson, Chief of Police

Re: Monthly Administrative Report

Labor Day weekend was busy.

Lt Brad Buchholz has advised me today that he has accepted the position of chief of police for the Village of Sharon=. He will start there as of October 3rd. We will need to begin the process of seeking a replacement. I have prepared a separate sheet regarding the talking points on accomplishing this.

Work on replacing the sidewalk and parking a lot at the PSB began the second week of September.  When done we will have more area in the lot to maneuver/park vehicles, be handicap accessible and easier to plow snow.

I have sent a draft revision of the Village’s weapons ordinance to the committee members for review prior to the meeting. This is common wording I have seen at other communities. In short we can not prohibit weapons in our parks only in the restrooms and beach house. At events in the park were alcoholic beverages are being sold we can prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to anyone who is armed.

I have submitted our report on the DOT enforcement program done during the Labor Day period. We will now await word to see if we win the drawing for the equipment grant.

Our effort to scan old police reports from the pre computer days is progressing well with close to 10 years now preserved. It is interesting to note that it appears that crime and serious traffic accidents were far worse in the 1980s than now. The paper reports are then being destroyed to open up space in our storage area.

Our new intern has begun riding with our officers. He is Shane Rode a student at Gateway Technical College in the Criminal Justice Program. He will be with an officer about twice a week through December on various shifts. He will also observe office operations during that time. As reminder, an intern is not paid and unlike CSO can not issue any citations but may help in some administrative duties.

Several PD members volunteered at the Pig in the Park (no pun intended) event.

The Fat Tire rally passed uneventfully.
